4 Tips on Buying Sustainable Bedroom Furniture

It can be difficult to find furniture that is well-designed, of quality construction and manufactured in a way that is environmentally friendly. How can you find bedroom furniture that is stylish, sustainable, eco-friendly and affordable? The following 4 tips will help finding sustainable bedroom furniture easy.

1. Recycle

One place to start, is looking for bedroom furniture that is made from recycled products or materials. Whether it is recycled textiles used to make upholstery fabric or reclaimed wood used to construct a dresser, recycled materials look great and are very durable options. You can also do your part by recycling household products, especially furniture, so they don’t end up in a landfill. Consider donating used furniture to a local thrift store or placing an ad on a website like craigslist.

2. Renew

Consider bedroom furniture made of materials that are organic and can be easily re-grown or replaced. For instance, bamboo is an excellent material for bedroom furniture products, because it grows back very quickly. Bamboo is one of the earth's fastest growing plants. It is a grass that grows to maturity in 5 years or less. Bamboo is a fully sustainable, environmentally friendly and rapidly growing renewable resource.

3. Choose Healthy, Safer Materials

Make sure that the materials that make up your bedroom furniture are safe for you and your family. Most compressed and veneer woods in furniture are made with chemicals such as formaldehydes and low quality glues, binders and harsh chemicals that off-gas toxic fumes into the bedroom environment. Eco-friendly furniture is not made of such toxic materials. The result is a product that is healthier for the environment you live and breathe in.

4. Look for Certifications and Stewardship

Some eco-friendly bedroom furniture collections are made of raw materials that are certified from fairly-traded sources and are considered to have low environmental impact. When purchasing bedroom furniture, look for certified wood and certified wood products through the E-1 Emission Standard, International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). These organizations promote conservation, sustainable management, as well as use and trade of tropical forest resources. Materials and products endorsed by these organizations ensure that the base wood materials used in manufacturing are harvested from forests in a sustainable and renewable manner.

By choosing eco-friendly, sustainable bedroom furniture, you are purchasing products made with materials which are sustainably harvested, assembled in a less ecologically harmful manner, and that do not off gas dangerous chemicals and gasses. This is good for you and good for the environment.
