Experience the epitome of traditional Japanese comfort with Haiku's Natural Wool and Organic Cotton Shiki Mat. Crafted for layering on tatami beds or Tatami mats on the floor, the Shiki Mats blend seamlessly with your lifestyle, whether placed directly on the floor or atop one another. The ingenious design encompasses a cotton core enveloped by breathable natural wool, all encased in a cotton twill fabric. This combination ensures a great night's rest by effectively dissipating moisture and regulating temperature, thus enhancing sleep quality throughout every season.

Natural Virgin Wool

Our GOTS Certified Organic Wool is a remarkable material that serves as a natural moisture repellant and offers impeccable temperature control, making it ideal for every season. Notably, it functions as a natural fire barrier, ensuring safety without compromising on sustainability. Harvested exclusively from humanely raised sheep, our wool is naturally felted using our Wool Carding Machine, embodying our commitment to both eco-friendly practices and your peaceful night's rest.

Organic Cotton Layer

We incorporate a layer of USDA-certified organic cotton into our futon mattresses, ensuring a pesticide-free and environmentally friendly choice. This type of cotton not only causes fewer allergies compared to conventional cotton but also offers a notably softer texture. Furthermore, its renewable and sustainable nature aligns with our commitment to eco-conscious practices. The cotton undergoes a natural felting process in our cotton gin machine, resulting in enhanced breathability, optimal air circulation, and a luxurious supportive feel that enhances the comfort of our futon mattresses.

Organic Cotton Cover

Our meticulously handmade, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic, cotton case is exceptionally crafted with care and is not only pesticide-free but also causes fewer allergies and is softer compared to conventional cotton. Its exquisite softness surpasses that of conventionally grown cotton, offering a cocoon of comfort. Embrace sustainability as this case is both renewable and handmade, reflecting our dedication to your comfort and conscientious living.

Embracing versatility, the Shiki Mat conveniently rolls up for storage, offering a practical solution for preserving space when not in use. Elevate your comfort by stacking multiple Shiki Mats to cultivate a softer slumber surface according to your personal preference. Notably, this version of the Shikibuton prides itself on not including any foam, synthetic fibers, or chemical flame retardants. Tailor your comfort by opting for a mattress thickness of either 3 or 5 inches, a testament to our commitment to accommodating your unique sleep needs.

Mattress Topper & Shikibuton Care Sheet:

Toppers and Shikibutons will compress about 10-15% during the first 3 to 6 months of use. This occurs when the crimp in the wool or cotton fibers begin to decrease and moisture begins to build up. Repeatedly sleeping in the same spot on a new topper or shikibuton will create a very noticeable depression or dip. The proper care will help prevent your topper or shikibuton from dipping & sagging. These Five steps below will ensure that your new topper or shikibuton will wear evenly and last for years to come.

  1. Rotate - Be sure to rotate your Topper or Shikibuton every week by flipping it on the reverse side. Do not sit or sleep on the same side of the topper or shikibuton.
  2. Circulate - Shikibutons should be placed on cocopads or tatami mats so they can breathe properly. This can also prevent them from getting flat over time.
  3. Protector - Protect your Topper or Shikibuton from stains and dirt by using a removable futon cover or a mattress pad.
  4. Sun - Toppers & Shikibutons need to be placed in the Sun twice a year to remove moisture.
  5. Airing - Toppers & Shikibutons need the proper airflow to keep their optimal softness and last for years to come.

These easy steps will help you maintain and care for your Mattress & Futon Mattress which will allow them to last for years to come!

Global Organic Textile Standard: GOTS is recognised as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well.

Our natural wool vendors have conditions in which sheep are raised humanely with plenty of room to graze and enjoy the sunshine in a mulesing free environment. The sheep are treated respectfully and do not get harmed to produce the wool for our bedding.
